Our Work

National Palace of the Republic of Haiti

Retained by the government of Haiti, Miyamoto International conducted damage surveys of the National Palace of the Republic of Haiti to assess damage resulting from the magnitude 7.0 earthquake on January 12, 2010. The earthquake caused severe damage to the National Palace. The National Palace is composed of unreinforced masonry and nonductile concrete frames, which have not performed well during past seismic events. This three-story structure is E-shaped in plan. Construction was completed in approximately 1920. The upper floor and the front wing collapsed during this event. Immediately after the earthquake, we were asked to investigate the following: 1. Magnitude of damage. 2. Safety path to retrieve important national documents. 3. Feasibility of repairing the structure. Our in-depth field investigation and analysis revealed that this national historic building can be salvaged and repaired economically. Our findings are being used to strategize on the repair and reconstruction of this important building.
