Earthquake Chronicles: Haiti 2010-2011

Yellow House Repair Program

Following the devastating January 2010 earthquake, an initial damage assessment process determined whether buildings were safe (green), sustained limited damage (yellow), or were unsafe (red). For the highest immediate impact, yellow tagged houses have been flagged for repair and are being repaired through various programs.

Haitian Contractors – Haitian contractors are employed to rebuild houses, who in turn employ masons.  They are encouraged to grow their business.

Total Repaired Houses – This number represents the total number of houses repaired since the beginning of the program in June 2011.  This number only represents the repaired houses in this particular PADF program; there have been previous programs with PADF and there are other yellow house programs with OFDA, DAI, Adoration, UNOPS, and the Red Cross.

Open Contracts – As the program moves through the zones, contracts are signed with homeowners.  The contracts are then fulfilled when the repair work is complete.
